By removing surface corrosion, metallography provides information about the composition and distribution of elements within the metal. This information helps detect modern reproductions, ancient forgeries, and changes in ancient metal caused by chemical reactions over time.

Radiocarbon dating

Radiocarbon dating is used to determine the age of organic materials. It relies on the measurement of C14, a radioactive isotope of carbon, to assess the age of an object. Comparing the measured C14 content with stable carbon content helps establish an item’s age. Third party laboratories offer radiocarbon dating services.

Thermoluminescence

Thermoluminescence (TL) is a dating technique specifically employed for ceramic materials. This process involves subjecting the material to thermal energy, which releases trapped electrons. As the freed electrons recombine with atoms, they emit photons (light particles). By measuring the emitted light during heating and comparing it to calibrated material with known emissions data, we can estimate the amount of radiation the material has acquired since it was fired. Dividing the quantity of radiation by a known acquisition rate per year, allows us to determine the approximate age of the pottery.

X-Ray Diffraction (XRD)

XRD is a technique similar to XRF (X-Ray Fluorescence) that measures the diffraction pattern of a surface to provide information about the elements present. It is particularly useful for comparing surface treatments such as pottery glazes and pigments. Several third party laboratories offer XRD services, expanding the analytical capabilities for artefact authentication and analysis.
