South Italian Black Glazed Lekythos

This lekythos employs the black-varnish technique, which gives it a glossy black finish after firing. It has a round body for a secure grip, a slim neck, and a noticeable mouth. There are no figurative decorations, but it contrasts the black with reddish ceramic bands at the base and mouth.

Originating from ancient Greece, the lekythos stored perfumed oils for body care and had an elongated shape with a narrow neck and wide mouth, making oil application easier. It was also used in funerary rituals.
